Brain Injury

There are two different types of brain injuries a victim can sustain:
  • Acquired brain injury (ABI)
An acquired brain injury can be the result of a stroke, tumors, epilepsy, infections, hypoxia, anoxia, and exposure to toxic chemicals amongst other causes.
  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
These are caused by an external force resulting in head trauma or the rapid acceleration and deceleration of the head. TBIs are classified under two different types: open and closed injuries. An open brain injury occurs when an object penetrates the scalp and enters the brain. A closed brain injury occurs when the brain is knocked against the skull.

Both types of brain injuries disrupt the brains normal functioning and can result in mild, moderate, or severe brain damage.

Mild and moderate brain damage can result in a number of symptoms, including but not limited to:
  • Headaches
  • Confusion
  • Memory loss
  • Loss of balance and/or coordination
  • Nausea
Severe brain damage can result in those symptoms and additional symptoms, including but not limited to:
  • Neurological issues
  • Vision problems
  • Paralysis
  • Behavioral changes
  • Disruption to the cognitive process

A brain injury can result in great financial hardships and other damages.

Recoverable damages associated with a brain injury can include:
  • Loss of wages
  • Hospital bills
  • Physical therapy
  • Disability
  • Pain and suffering
  • Mental anguish
  • Emotional distress
  • Loss of time with family
  • Loss of the care or guidance of a parent

Spinal Cord Injury

Your spinal cord is a bundle of nerves that runs down the middle of your back. It carries signals back and forth between your body and your brain. A spinal cord injury disrupts the signals. Spinal cord injuries usually begin with a blow that fractures or dislocates your vertebrae, the bone disks that make up your spine. Most injuries don't cut through your spinal cord. Instead, they cause damage when pieces of vertebrae tear into cord tissue or press down on the nerve parts that carry signals.

Spinal cord injuries can be complete or incomplete. With a complete spinal cord injury, the cord can't send signals below the level of the injury. As a result, you are paralyzed below the injury. With an incomplete injury, you have some movement and sensation below the injury.

Spinal Cord Injuries are extremely costly.

According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center:

The average yearly health care and living expenses related to a spinal cord injury vary greatly depending on the several of the spinal cord injury. The (2012) estimates are:
  • First Year: $334,170 - $1,023,924
  • Each Subsequent Year: $40,589 - $177,808/year

Head Injuries

A head injury is any trauma that injures the scalp, skull, or brain. The injury may be only a minor bump on the skull or a serious brain injury.

A head injury can be either closed or open (penetrating).

  • Closed Head Injury.
A closed head injury means you received a hard blow to the head from striking an object, but the object did not break the skull.
  • Open Head Injury.
An open, or penetrating, head injury means you were hit with an object that broke the skull and potentially entered the brain.
